- Collects patient, physician and test order information in order to create patient accounts. This includes verifying patient identification, insurance information, physician credentials and test order requirements.
- Performs assigned pre-analytical activities related to laboratory testing, which may include:
- Collects patient, physician and test order information in order to create patient accounts. This includes verifying patient identification, insurance information, physician credentials and test order requirements.
- Blood specimen collection via venipuncture or capillary puncture for all age groups
- Receives, and processes patient specimens which includes separating specimens by centrifugation prior to testing. May include transporting.
- Aliquots different sample types, if needed, and either loads preanalytical instruments, which include automated stainers, or delivers them to the testing department
- Cytopreparatory staining
- Accessioning of surgical cases that requires a knowledge of anatomy.
- Receive and set up cultures. Inoculation of different petri dishes for bacterial growth
- Blood and/or Blood Component processing, storing, shipping, modifying and selecting compatible products using a validated Transfusion Information System
- Performs periodic preventive instrument maintenance and quality assurance procedures as assigned
- Continually maintains workspaces neat and organized by cleaning and disinfecting selected or assigned laboratory equipment. Keeps lab areas and spaces properly supplied.

- High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent
- Completion of Blood Collection Program, Medical Lab Assistant Program, or similar training program appropriate to anticipated department assignment
- 1-year experience in hospital laboratory setting appropriate to department work assigned
- Current student seeking higher educational degree or certification in a science field such as nursing, medical technology, pre-med, or related field may be substituted for the 1-year hospital experience
LICENSURE, CERTIFICATION OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED:
- N/A
- National Certification in Phlebotomy if phlebotomy duties are required
- National Certification as a Medical Lab Assistant
- Specimen collection and transporting
- Specimen processing; trouble shooting sample and order discrepancies
- Submission and monitoring of specimens submitted to referral laboratories; shipping samples to reference laboratories or facilities for consult; entering billing information
- Patient registration
- Perform equipment maintenance procedures
- Blood component preparation and issuance
- Receiving and inoculation of culture media
- Accession surgical cases requiring knowledge of anatomy; trouble shoot and escalate any missing surgical specimens; assign and distribute slides to pathologists
- Inventory and ordering of supplies
